RESEARCH
I am interested in wildlife ecology and demography across broad spatial scales, and in benefiting the conservation of endangered and threatened species.
My master’s research is focused on acoustic monitoring of the California spotted owl (Strix occidentalis occidentalis) in the Sierra Nevada. I seek to assess the spatial and temporal aspects of spotted owl vocalizations using bioacoustic monitoring data. My research aims to establish the “vocal home range” size of spotted owls, account for false detections of nonresident owls and, if possible, determine pair and breeding status from vocalizations alone. This research will increase our understanding of spotted owl vocalization patterns and demonstrate new ways of utilizing data from acoustic monitoring programs.
